The Japanese origins of the Australian rice industry

Sauce is delighted to have collaborated with SunRice and Anvil Media to share the origin of the Australian rice industry and its deep connection with Japan in a new video. Set in the Riverina of New South Wales, “The Japanese Origins of Australian Short Grain Rice” video documents the pioneering efforts of Isaburo ‘Jo’ Takasuka, the first person to grow a commercial crop of rice in Australia more than 110 years ago. Author Mina Matsudaira helps to tell Jo’s story and why it had inspired her to write a book about his life, while rice breeding export Russell Ford shares how Japanese culture continues to influence Australian rice growing techniques today.
